Unfortunately, this was during the decline of the Roman Empire.
As long as that light burned, Britain’s enemies knew Rome protected the country. They lit it mostly to guide ships, but the light also had symbolic function. There was a massive lighthouse at Rutupiae, where Dover is now, and every night Roman Legionnaires tasked with protecting Britain lit it. Culture, literacy, medicine, social rights - it had all the things we think of as advanced. Roman Britain in the fourth century was one of the most civilized places in the world.
A lil story… have you ever heard the story of Rutupiae Light? It’s part of a series of books I once read to my son. Out of all places, I got this from a children’s book.
We are the lantern bearers, my friend for us to keep something burning, to carry what light we can forward against the darkness and the wind.
